Our Plan A

Up until last week only our close family and friends knew about our plans for adopting from Ethiopia. We felt that until we were certain that things were moving forward, we would keep the news to ourselves. (Lesson learned from China) Now we are at the point where we are telling our employers, as I plan on teaching part-time next year. As we begin telling more people, it is interesting to see the responses that we get. Some are truly happy and excited for us, others are shocked while yet others are confused. For Chris and I, adoption is our Plan A. We have chosen to adopt rather than have biological children because we feel that there are too many children without families already in this world. We don't want people to feel sorry for us that we are adopting, but to celebrate with us. This is our path and we love it!

My husband has his own ideas why Adoption is your plan A...he feels that no sane person would let Chris reproduce! Ha,ha. Seriously though, we are very excited for you guys and admire your decision. We can wait to celebrate the pea with you guys!

Congrats Mary on your decision to go public, I know its not easy (I had a really hard time telling my work for some reason). We've had pretty mixed reactions too, and a lot of expectations that we can't have our "own" kids. We're like you- adoption is our plan A (and there is no plan B for us by choice), and we're comfortable with it, so I don't really mind if people assume otherwise. I think most of all people are just curious because so many people just assume everyone wants to have biological children, and never even consider their options. ---Shawn

I certainly don't "feel sorry" for you. If only those people knew how amazing and wonderful adopting from Ethiopia was.
I feel sorry for them. :)

You go girl! Mary, seriously I can relate. Adoption is Plan A. We have NEVER tried to have biological kids. We adopted our son 5 years ago, had a vasectomy, and now we are getting our ethiopian princess! Funny how some people have such closed minds--even people who claim to have such "open minds" cannot fathom this concept. Proud of you! Have to meet someday! Nancy
